John Winston Ono Lennon, MBE (9 October 1940 – 8 December 1980) was an English singer-songwriter who rose to worldwide fame as one of the founding members of The Beatles and, with Paul McCartney, formed one of the most successful songwriting partnerships of the 20th century.

Born and raised in Liverpool, Lennon became involved in the skiffle craze as a teenager, his first band, The Quarrymen, evolving into The Beatles in 1960. Lennon revealed a rebellious nature and acerbic wit in his music, his writing, on film, and in interviews, and became controversial through his work as a peace activist. He moved to New York City in 1971, where his criticism of the Vietnam War resulted in a lengthy attempt by Richard Nixon's administration to deport him, while his songs were adapted as anthems by the anti-war movement. Disengaging himself from the music business in 1975 to devote time to his family, Lennon reemerged in 1980 with a comeback album, Double Fantasy, but was murdered three weeks after its release.

Lennon's solo album sales in the United States alone stand at 14 million units and as performer, writer, or co-writer he is responsible for 27 number one singles on the US Hot 100 chart.a In 2002, a BBC poll on the 100 Greatest Britons voted him eighth, and in 2008, Rolling Stone ranked him the fifth greatest singer of all time. He was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1987 and into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.

The Indian rupee will soon have a unique symbol -- a blend of the Devanagri 'Ra' and Roman 'R' -- joining elite currencies like the US dollar, euro, British pound and Japanese yen in having a distinct identity.

The new symbol, designed by Bombay IIT post-graduate D Udaya Kumar, was approved by the cabinet today -- reflecting that the Indian currency, backed by an over-trillion dollar economy, was finally making its presence felt on the international scene.

Now we too are proud that we have an international symbol for rupee..........

The official mascot for the 2010 FIFA World Cup is Zakumi (born 16 June 1994 (1994-06-16) (age 15)), an anthropomorphised leopard with green hair, presented on 22 September 2008. His name comes from "ZA", the international abbreviation for South Africa, and "kumi", a word that means "ten" in various African languages. The mascot's colours reflect those of the host nation's playing strip – yellow and green.

Zakumi's birthdate coincides with a day known and celebrated as Youth Day in South Africa and their second group match. The year 1994 marks the first non-racial nationwide elections in South Africa. He will turn 16 in 2010. Andries Odendaal, from Cape Town, created the original character design.

Zakumi's official motto is: "Zakumi's game is Fair Play." The motto was seen in the digital advertisement boards during the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, and it will also appear at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.[46]

A contract for the manufacture of Zakumi figurines was awarded to a company owned Dr. Shiaan-Bin Huang, who is an ANC representative member in the South African parliament. The manufacture of the figurines was outsourced to Shanghai Fashion Plastic Products in the PRC. The value of the contract was in excess of USD 112 million[citation needed]. Due to concerns over the loss of jobs in the South African manufacturing sector, the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) has suggested that more 2010 merchandise be sourced locally.[50] Allegation of sweatshop conditions at the Shanghai Fashion Plastic Products factory led to an audit by Global Brands Group (master licensee of the Fifa World Cup 2010 brand), which revealed a number of non-compliance issues with GBC policies.[48] The manufacturer denied the allegations of sweatshop conditions and claimed that the working conditions at the Shanghai Fashion Plastic Products factory were "very good".



Official song

The official song of the FIFA world cup "Waka Waka" is presented by the Colombian singer Shakira and the band Freshlyground from South Africa, and is sung in both English and Spanish.The song is based upon a traditional African soldiers' song named Zangalewa.

Shakira and Freshlyground will perform the song at the pre-tournament Kick-Off concert in Soweto on 10 June. It will also be sung at the opening ceremony and at the final on 11 July.

The match ball for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, manufactured by Adidas, will be named the Jabulani, which means "bringing joy to everyone" in isiZulu. The number eleven plays a prominent role in the new technologically advanced ball: it is the eleventh World Cup match ball made by the German sports equipment maker; it features eleven colours, one for each player on the pitch; and there are eleven official languages in South Africa. The event will also start on the eleventh day of June and end on the eleventh day of July. A special match ball with gold panels will be used at the final held in Johannesburg.

The ball was also used as the match ball of the 2009 FIFA Club World Cup in the United Arab Emirates, and a special version of the ball, the Jabulani Angola, was the match ball of the 2010 African Cup of Nations. This ball is also used in the 2009/2010 season of South Africa's Premier Soccer League, as well as the country's 2010 Nedbank Cup, 2010 Clausura Tournament of Argentina as well as the 2010 MLS season in the USA in the league's colours of blue and green.

The ball is constructed using a new design, consisting of eight thermally-bonded, three-dimensional panels. These are spherically-moulded from ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) and thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU). The surface of the ball is textured with grooves, a technology developed by Adidas called GripnGroove that is intended to improve the ball's aerodynamics. The design has received considerable academic input, being developed in partnership with researchers from Loughborough University, United Kingdom.

The balls are made in China, using latex bladder made in India, thermoplastic polyurethane-elastomer from Taiwan, ethylene vinyl acetate, isotropic polyester/cotton fabric, glue and ink from China.

This years campus edition of TATA CRUCIBLE was held at the Taj Coramandel,Nuggumbakkam.The quiz as i had reffered to in my previous posts got better n tougher.Anna University,Guindy ended up winning the quiz.

I could have done better if i had written down what ever i guessed but anyways it was hard luck ....................hoping to do better in the next edition.....

Naina Lal Kidwai

Naina Lal Kidwai (born 1957) is the Chief Executive Officer of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation India branches. She is the first Indian woman to graduate from the Harvard Business School.

Fortune magazine listed Kidwai among the World's Top 50 Corporate Women from 2000 to 2003. According to The Economic Times, she is the first woman to head the operations of a foreign bank in India.

She began her career in banking with ANZ Grindlays Bank (acquired by Standard Chartered Bank in 2000)and then moved on to head the Indian operations of Morgan Stanley. She left Morgan Stanley in 2002 to join HSBC India as head of its investment banking business. In May 2005, she was named country head of the HSBC Group in India.

She has been awarded with Padma Shri, one of the highest civilian honours bestowed by the Government of India. The announcement was made by Rashtrapati Bhawan on 26 Jan 2007. Naina has got the honour for her exemplary work in the promotion of Trade and Industry.

Naina Lal is a Chartered Accountant and pursued an MBA at Harvard Business School. Her mother is the sister of industrialist Lalit Mohan Thapar. Her cousin, Gautam Thapar heads the Avantha Group, one of India's fastest growing conglomerates. Naina is married to Rashid Kidwai who runs the NGO, Digital Partners.

Naina Lal Kidwai is currently the Group General Manager and Country Head of HSBC India.

Iraq war movie 'The Hurt Locker', took the Oscars by storm when it won six of the major film honours, including best movie and director for Kathryn Bigelow who became the first woman to win that honour.


'Hurt Locker' and Bigelow won Oscars over stiff competition from her ex-husband James Cameron, whose sci-fi adventure, 'Avatar', is the top-grossing movie ever with $2.5 billion at box offices and was seen as a favourite for best movie.'Avatar' earned 3 Oscars, but in technical categories -- visual effects, cinematography and art direction.

CBS bought the rights in 1973 after moving the ceremony to Nashville, Tennessee; the American Music Awards were created for ABC as a result.
The 52nd Grammy Awards (2010) ceremony was held at the Los Angeles' Staples Center.

The actual trophy is manufactured exclusively by Billings Artworks in Ridgway, Colorado. The trophies are all hand made and assembled. Years ago, the old smaller gramophone had to be revamped because the metals were too soft and there were many problems with the trophy breaking. The trophy was made bigger and grander.The Grammy is assembled in pieces and finally finished off in gold plating. The trophies used for the broadcast are called "stunt" Grammys.
As of 2007, 7,578 Grammy trophies have been awarded.
